  • Malibu Functional Medicine (MFM) is a telemedicine practice that offers convenient, accessible medical care in the state of California. You set the pace for your personalized plan: one visit a year or several. For individuals struggling with chronic disease, the objective is better quality of life using fewer conventional pharmaceuticals. For those prioritizing wellness, the goal is detection of asymptomatic problems thus decreasing the likelihood that disease will occur. And if you have a loved one with a chronic illness, Dr. Johnson has both personal experience and professional training in the Family Systems Approach to help support you.

  • Functional medicine is an approach towards health and wellness that was founded in 1990 by Dr. Jeffrey Bland, a US biochemist and researcher. His goal was to reshape conventional (Western) medicine to prevent and manage disease in a more holistic way. The word ‘functional’ relates to performance or whether something is working properly. Functional medicine philosophically draws from ancient traditions, such as traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda medicine, that emphasize the principal of balance, i.e., that most people are born ‘in balance' and disease occurs when body systems are no longer in equilibrium. As such, functional practitioners are trained to look for what is causing these shifts, what is also known as epigenetics.

  • Most people are familiar with the concept of genetics, DNA sequences that we inherit. Epigenetics is the study of how the environment and lifestyle can change the way that genes work. Unlike genetic alterations, epigenetic changes do not modify the DNA sequence—they vary how your body expresses it. An example of this is type 2 diabetes. Individuals are not born with this condition, nor do they wake up one day and suddenly ‘have’ diabetes. Instead, something has changed so that the body can no longer respond to insulin effectively. Functional medicine practitioners look for ways to restore this balance.

  • Integrative medicine is an approach that combines conventional Western therapies with a wide range of therapies that have not been considered standard, including acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, naturopathy and homeopathy. Functional medicine is a type of integrative medicine.

  • The fundamental difference is the time allotted to lifestyle, especially nutrition. Food and food choices are considered first-line therapy. Dr. Johnson is familiar with and employs the use of supplements, and naturopathic alternatives as well as conventional pharmaceutics. Also, patients often benefit from a team-based approach and Dr. Johnson is happy to work in conjunction with your primary care provider and other specialists.

Meet Dr. Johnson

For a number of years, Dr. Johnson practiced medicine as a primary care provider. Then, several family health issues redirected her focus toward Functional Medicine and a long journey that encouraged her to rethink her therapeutic approach: how food can be therapeutic, the importance of lifestyle in health and wellness, the use of supplements and botanicals, and the impact of environmental factors. Dr. Johnson founded Malibu Functional Medicine with the mission to provide a holistic model of care that blends this knowledge with her MD training. Outside of medicine, Dr. Johnson finds joy in singing, cooking, listening to her family pun, walking with her dogs on the beach, and traveling with friends.

  • “Dr. Susan Fox helped our daughter through a really difficult period with IBS when she was an older teen. She was dealing with frequent stomach pain and digestive issues that were significantly impacting her quality of life. Susan took the time to truly listen and look at the bigger picture rather than just treating her symptoms. Her approach was very thorough and she worked closely with our daughter to find solutions that were both effective and manageable for a teenager. Over time, the improvement was remarkable. Our daughter’s symptoms were significantly reduced and she now feels like herself again. We’re very grateful for Dr. Fox’s care and would highly recommend her to families dealing with complex health or digestive issues.” -JG

  • “I have known Dr. Johnson for over 15 years, both as a highly regarded doctor in our community and as a fellow parent with similar-aged children.  I have now come to know Dr. Johnson in a professional capacity.  I travelled to Africa 2 summers ago and became infected with an intestinal parasite.  As a result of the parasite,  I developed a significant case of Small Intestinal Overgrowth (SIBO), which I had tried to treat with two different doctors.  Nothing worked and I was suffering with debilitating flare-ups regularly.  Fortunately, I ran into Dr. Johnson one day and explained what was going on.  SIBO happens to be one of Dr. Johnson's areas of expertise being both an MD and a Function Medicine doctor, she has a hefty background with measurable results.  Thus began a year-long trial-and-error effort to track down what in my diet was causing the flare-ups.  Dr. Johnson was very careful not to use antibiotics any more than was necessary and placed me on several different regimens of creative and effective diet strategies,  taking in my food inventory, using different pro and prebiotics, and ultimately the importance of digestive enzymes.  Dr. Johnson also treated my brain-gut connection with referrals for meditation and a therapeutic approach to stress management which is currently in process.

  • Dr. Johnson always follows up with phone calls or texts and even makes house calls, one of which resulted in her having to give my husband a full explanation of what was going on with my digestive health.

I highly recommend Dr. Johnson as a skilled MD Functional Medicine doctor.  Her personality is warm, calm and quietly confident.  With her extensive medical training, which she continues to broaden on a regular basis, I know I am being treated with latest data, and I completely trust her with my health. -LS
